Tips You Won't Find in a Guidebook
Ghumakkad Insider Tips
- 01Rohtang Pass permits sell out by 9am in peak season (May–June) — your driver needs to queue online the night before, not the morning of.
- 02Old Manali's cafes triple their prices the moment a tour bus parks nearby — walk two lanes back from the main road for the same food at local rates.
- 03Kasol's Parvati Valley loses phone signal almost entirely past Kasol town — tell family your last-contact point before heading up to Tosh or Kheerganga.
- 04Solang Valley's paragliding operators bundle a photo/video package into the price by default — say no upfront if you don't want it, since it's rarely deducted after the fact.
Good to Know
Himachal Pradesh Questions, Answered
It can be, but mountain roads — especially Rohtang and Kunzum — demand real driving experience and chains in winter. Most of our travelers prefer a private driver, which we include as standard.
No permit for the standard Manali/Kasol circuit. Spiti and areas near the Tibet border need an Inner Line Permit, arranged separately if your itinerary goes that far.
Manali and Kasol sit under 2,500m and are generally fine. If your itinerary includes Rohtang Pass (3,978m) or further into Spiti, we build in acclimatization time and brief you on symptoms to watch for.
Very — Manali and Solang get genuine snowfall from December, and the boutique hill properties lean into fireplaces and mountain views. Book 6–8 weeks ahead for the Christmas–New Year window.
